The lifestyle coordinator is the person in every Seasons community who is just as likely to be covered in glitter as they are in the white dust from a pair of rubber gloves following lunch service.
According to Kelly, it’s a hands-on role that requires lots of interaction with residents.
“The name says it all for me. I coordinate lifestyle activities for the residents. I like that the residents and I can sit down and coordinate things together. After all, it is about what they want to do, not what I want to do,” says Kelly.
“I enjoy being a lifestyle coordinator so much. It is wonderful to have so much fun with everyone. I love the smile I put on their faces every day, and sometimes the tears when they share with me an old memory.”
For Kelly, smiles and laughter are a mandatory part of her job.
“If I haven’t made someone laugh so hard that they nearly wet their pants, then I haven’t done my job properly! I love being the clown and I love to have fun with them all. Life is too short – smile and be happy!”
“I start work at 8.30am, but I’m usually at work well before then.
I clean up the breakfast table, I say good morning and have a chat with the residents that are around. I then put out sugars, teaspoons and salt and peppers on all the tables in the dining room.
If no one is asking for me I do some computer work for half an hour.
At 10 am, I serve morning tea and then assist residents with cleaning up.
I then jump straight into activities that start at 10.30 am. These run right through until 11.30 am. I then run the lunch trays for lunch, then back to lunch service.
At 1 pm I can finally sit down and have some lunch. 1.20 pm I am usually back at my desk or setting up the afternoon activities. Once my work day is over I then head home and continue to do more work at home online. I then come back and do it all again the next day!
A lifestyle coordinator’s job doesn’t finish at the end of the day, there are many hours that we put in to make sure that our residents have the best leisure program.”
At Seasons Kallangur, this leisure program includes a variety of activities:
Kelly also organises a number of bigger events throughout the year, including Christmas Carols, Remembrance Day and Anzac Day, which holds a special place in her heart.
“The most memorable event I hold is our Anzac Day Service – there is nothing that will ever beat it.”
