Pauline and Keith are a much-loved couple from Seasons Waterford West, who are actively involved in the community. Here they share their favourite recipe for when the weather cools down – the classic Pea & Ham Soup.

If you take a visit to Seasons Waterford West, you’re sure to see either Keith or Pauline somewhere within the community areas. In fact, Keith can be found doing everything from taking sweepstake money during Melbourne Cup celebrations through to dressing up as Santa when the children from Little Bunya’s childcare come to visit before Christmas.

Along with sharing their pea and ham soup recipe, Pauline and Keith shared a few words of wisdom with us.

When asked what life motto they both live by. Pauline replied with “Treat other people the way you like to be treated yourself”.

Keith said his motto is “To make people smile”.

And when asked what the secret to a living a long and happy life is, Pauline says that it’s all about being in the moment.

“Never put off something you need to do today. Tomorrow may never come.”

On that note, I’m off to try this tasty recipe!

Ingredients

1 ham hock

1 packet of yellow split peas

1 large onion, chopped

2-3 sticks of celery, chopped

6 cups of water

Method

Put all ingredients into a large pot, cover it all with water and cook on low heat all day. Remove ham hock from pan and remove the meat from the bone. Coarsely chop the meat and add back into the soup. Enjoy with crusty bread.
