Iced Tea is easy to make and you can either enjoy it unsweetened or control the amount of sugar you use to ensure it’s healthy and tastes great.
Dehydration in the elderly is common in summer, so whipping up a batch of this in the morning and sipping it throughout the day can help you keep cool and hydrated.
Another benefit is that tea is an excellent source of polyphenol antioxidants, which can help fight cell damage and inflammation.
4 tea bags of your choice (English breakfast or Green tea are good choices depending on your preference)
2 cups of boiling water
1 cup iced water
2 cups ice cubes
1 lemon, thinly sliced
Juice of ½ lemon
Add the boiling water to a teapot or heatproof jug and brew the tea bags for 5 minutes.
Remove the tea bags and leave to cool.
Transfer to a serving pitcher and add the lemon juice, iced water, ice cubes and lemon slices.
If you prefer your tea sweet, add sugar or honey to taste. Add this to the hot tea after you’ve removed the tea bags.
You can substitute other citrus fruits for the lemon and feel free to add other fruits such as berries or in season stone fruits to flavour your tea. Fresh mint is also a refreshing addition.
